Small businesses are vital to Detroit’s recovery -- they are creating jobs, contributing to diverse and vibrant neighborhoods and a thriving urban core, stimulating innovation and powering the regional economy. From the culinary entrepreneurs growing their businesses at the commercial kitchen facility in Eastern Market, to the small contractors who are finding opportunity in construction projects throughout the city, there is hard evidence of how Detroit is providing small businesses with the capital and technical assistance they need to grow, and in turn contribute to the city’s economic recovery.
Join Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and JPMorgan Chase’s Jamie Dimon for a discussion of the city’s economic revitalization, the challenges facing entrepreneurs and the partnerships that are making a difference. The conversation will be moderated by Jenn Piepszak, CEO of Chase Business Banking, which does business with more than 4 million small business owners across the country.

Well, DABI's gathered 5 experts to sit with the creative community and answer your questions. You'll meet other art & design entrepreneurs to learn from the experts and each other. You can move around the room or stay with a particular expert.

Hear thoughts from our industry expert panel on these subjects, then break into small groups for a credit matchmaking “speed date” to understand and learn actionable steps of how to use credit to capitalize on emerging opportunities or deal with unexpected surprises in your business.

Mob Pitches is the first pitch event to utilizethe mob.
Every single pitch event offers a chance to win some money and make connections. Only Mob Pitches offers thoughtful feedback to all participants from a whole mob of intelligent potential customers, partners, and financiers.
STEP 1:
The “Mob Bosses” will select 2 start-ups per event, looking for interesting companies at a crossroads in the lifecycle of their business.
STEP 2:
A week before the event a Boss will work with each startup, helping with the pitch and building custom questionnaires. This questionnaire will be tailored to each company and to the problems they face. What’s my go-to-market strategy? What are some ideas for monetization? Etc.
STEP 3:
On the day of the event each company will give a 7-minute pitch.
STEP 4:
After the pitch the mob is given 5 silent minutes to think deeply about the questions and fill out the questionnaire.
STEP 5:
A brief period of Q&A to induce more critical thinking and quality feedback.
STEP 6:
A 15-minute group discussion session where groups are asked to fill out a group questionnaire. *Entrepreneurs are encouraged to work the room during this time to answer questions.
STEP 7:
After all startups have gone through this entire cycle, the questionnaires will be collected and curated by the Bosses.
STEP 8:
Finally, the Bosses will direct the Mob to a final online questionaire to complete on their own time. This questionaire will focus on the event as a whole.
STEP 9:
The Mob Bosses will schedule a final meeting with the startup. The entire stack of questionnaires will be given to the founder, additionally the Bosses will curate the responses and discuss the analysis with the founder.
STEP 10:
After they have had a chance to review the feedback, founders will report the three most impactful "mobsters" to the bosses, so a "Most Wanted" list can be made and distributed.

Why does company culture matter? We've all heard about "start-up" culture - but is there more to the picture?

Created in 2011, the BizGrid is Detroit's go-to resource for entrepreneurial support organizations and services. While the website has been kept up-to-date over time, the printed infographic has not been updated since its original launch approximately four years ago.
Thanks to funding made available by NEIdeas through the DEGC, the physical print infographic is being redesigned and updated by Good Done Daily (GDD).
Prior to printing the new version of the BizGrid, the Community Feedback session will serve as a final opportunity for service providers, entrepreneurs and community members alike to offer their perspective and insights.
At this meeting, we will also unveil our BizGrid Authorized program and highlight our BizGrid Service Provider Agreement.
Please make it a priority to have someone from your organization present at this event. If you cannot attend, please let us know at info@detroitbizgrid.com.

A showcase and brand and storytelling of successful local brands across a wide range of sectors. Each brand will have a booth showcasing one or more product as well as branding materials and have 10-minute presentation telling their story and sharing a few key factors to successful brand development. Focus is on product design and branding, for any entrepreneur wanting to build a brand and elevate their business.
Come meet some of Detroit's favorite startup brands, including: BonBonBon, Christina Fehan, Corbe Company, Detroit Bikes and The Smile Brand!
Themes include:
What is the difference between your “business” and your “brand”? (Is there a difference?)
How important is your story to creating your brand?
What is the role of art/design (graphic/web design, creative marketing, package design etc…) in conveying your story and creating your branding image?
Why is creating your brand/image key to building a successful business? How does it help connect you to your key demographic?
What are unique challenges (or advantages) to brand development in your sector?
Join Detroit's Urban Sustainability Happy Hour Meetup for a special Detroit Startup Week gathering in May. Alex B Hill and OpenIDEO will facilitate this month's discussion on open data, community engagement, and mapping.
Alex's work challenges us that beginning to collect and share data on an open platform is an importation step, but not a full solution. "We’ve come to think that the next app, data aggregator, or web map (line up the buzzwords: big data, information age, government-as-a-platform, transparency, crowdfunding, open data, civic tech) will change the world – but it is people who change the world with data, not vice versa. We must learn to prioritize people and their needs as we push open data. Data is often about fast responses and short timeframes for launch. Prioritizing people takes more effort and more time, but we must refocus or we will be lost among the tabular data."
Cassie and other members of the new Detroit chapter of OpenIDEO will lead a interactive human-centered design activity that builds on these themes and challenges our assumptions about creating community solutions.
