Executive Director
Hamtramck,Detroit, MI
Alissa Shelton (she/her) is a facilitator, citizen-developer, and community activist in Hamtramck, Detroit. She's curious and committed to how we build places together- both physically and through community. Interested in real estate as a tool for self-determination, expanding homeownership, alternative property ownership models (commons, co-ops, land-trusts) and of course the eventual abolishment of property ownership.

She is the first Executive Director at Brick + Beam Detroit, an organization which grows capacity and community around home repair and building rehabilitation in Detroit. Alissa was most recently the Director of Training for Incremental Development Alliance, a national nonprofit focused on citizen-led real estate development, where she worked on the national workshop and training series.
She is a founder of Bank Suey-- a1920s corner bank building, turned Chop Suey restaurant turned community space. Bank Suey is an experiment in how we use main street spaces, exploring layered uses and curated programming. Since opening in March 2016, the space has hosted over 300 gatherings with 6500+ attendees covering a broad range of topics, but unified by the purpose of building skills, understanding, and community confidence. Bank Suey has partnered with 60+ orgs in this programming, and is home to Book Suey, a cooperatively run book store focused on radical reads, local authors, and multilingual selections.
Alissa is a Licensed Builder in the state of Michigan, a 2017 Salzburg Global Fellow (Young Cultural Innovator seminar), and holds a BSc. in Psychology from Wayne State University.
