Jarret Schlaff lives on Detroit’s eastside in the Charlevoix Villages community and is committedto fostering neighborhood resilience and developing opportunities for sustainable, communitydriven job creation accessible to all. He volunteers alongside returning citizens in hisneighborhood who are leathercrafters and social impact entrepreneurs by mentoring theirproduction teams and through the non­profit arm of his company, shares scrap leather from Bootson the Ground at no cost to the community. These materials, initially coming from the DetroitAuto industry, are given new life by youth and other returning citizens who make a living wageby producing and selling these hand­crafted leather goods that are produced in the basement ofthe Church of the Messiah in Detroit.

Mr. Schlaff first worked to address the school to prison pipeline and support families of thosewho are incarcerated in Michigan from 2010 ­ 2012 as a caseworker, outreach, partnership, andrecruitment specialist for VIP Mentoring, a 501(C)3 non­profit in Detroit that recruits mentorsfrom Michigan businesses and the faith based community and matches them 1­on­1 to children ofincarcerated parents across 12 counties in MI. Jarret mentored 2 young men from this program for4 years, and is currently going on 6 years mentoring an amazing young man who teaches him justas much as he shares with his mentee through the VIP Mentoring community­based program.

Since 2008, he has launched four separate nonprofit projects currently making an impact in theyouth mentorship, environmental justice and food access arenas across Metro Detroit. He has 10years’ experience in management and personal, professional and organizational development.Jarret was named a Global Leadership Fellow by the Hesselbein Institute, was one of 90 leadersselected from across the U.S. as a 2015 Young American Leadership Fellow with HarvardBusiness School, named an Emerging Leader by the Detroit Chamber of Commerce, and was afinalist in the 2016 Regional Detroit Chamber of Commerce Pitch Competition.Mr. Schlaff was born and raised in Waterford, MI and has lived in Detroit since 2010.
